Pack Like The Minimalists

Pack Like The Minimalists Were on the road for ten months this year (2014), touring and filming a documentary.  Still, we  packed  lightâ€"just one carry-on each. (We are The Minimalists, after all.) But some of the things  we packed might surprise you. Our friend, director Matt DAvella, filmed this short video to give curious parties  a peek  at our packing regime. Enjoy. Oedipus the King Fate Vs Free Will Essay - 639 Words

Oedipus the King, was written by Sophocles between C.A.496-406B.C. In this play, Oedipus is a great example of Sophocles’ belief that fate will control a man’s life no matter how much free will exists. Oedipus is a man of unflagging determination and perseverance, but one who must learn through the working out of a terrible prophecy that there are forces beyond any man’s conceptualization or control. Oedipus’ actions were determined before his birth, yet Oedipus’ actions are entirely determined by the Gods who control him completely. In the beginning of this tragedy, Oedipus took many actions leading to his own downfall. He tried to escape Corinth when he learned of the prophecies that were supposed to take place in his life. Instead, he†¦show more content†¦Oedipus doesn’t realize the personal consequences his hunt for the murderer will have for him, and his loyalty to the truth is based on his ignorance. His pride, ignorance and unrelenting quest for the truth ultimately contributed to his destruction. An example is when Oedipus was told [after threatening Tiresias], that he was responsible for the murder of Laius. He became enraged and called the old oracle a liar. However, Oedipus thought he could outsmart the gods, but in fact, his every action moved him closer to the prophesy becoming a reality. Upon discovery of the truth of his birth from the herdsman, Oedipus cries, â€Å"O god all come true, all burst to light!/O light now let me look my last on you!/I stand revealed at last cursed in my birth, cursed in marriage, cursed in the lives I cut down with these hands†. (631). Oedipus knew that his fate had indeed come to pass and feels cursed by it. Oedipus was guilt, of killing his father and marrying his mother. He punishes himself for the sins he committed by gouging out his eyes. The true sin is when he attempts to raise himself to the level of the gods by trying to escape his fate. Oedipus is accepting the full burden of his acts and knows that he must be punished for his sins. Analysis Of Booker T. Washington - 1476 Words

Booker T. Washington, in his autobiographical book Up From Slavery, recounts his formative experiences as a child and his work as an adult. Only 9 years old when the Civil War ended, Washington grew up during the Reconstruction Era. With African Americans able to attend school following Emancipation, Washington worked hard to get an education. Race relations of the era and the challenges African Americans faced would come to inspire Washington to pursue teaching and advocacy. He would come to establish the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute and would play an influential role as a public advocate. Washington held the opinion that African Americans would be best served by pursuing education, economic advancement, and by exercising†¦show more content†¦He had come to be a believer in the virtuousness of manual labor, effort, and merit. He believed that struggling to overcome obstacles through one’s own hard work helps a person develop a better character and that t he rewards of success would be all the sweeter. He would come to teach these philosophies along with practical skills and then advocate for their broader incorporation as a means for African Americans to independently pull themselves up by their bootstraps and achieve greater social standing and better racial relations. Symbolism of the Red Flapper Dress in Angela’s Ashes Free Essays

In Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes, the symbol of Angela’s red flapper dress highlights the pain of lost dreams. This symbol is very important because it highlights Angela’s youthful dreams, the beginning of Frank’s dreams and also how Angela’s dreams end. Frank uses Angela’s red dress to make uniforms for a soccer game against the rich kids. This tells you that Angela was once a happy, carefree girl who enjoyed dancing.This time in her life was full of dreams and hope for the future. Saving the dress was a sign of those good times. Mr. Clohessy also makes Angela cry for her lost dreams when he says: â€Å"We could have won competitions, Angela. Fred and Ginger would have been lookin’ over their shoulders but you had to run off to America. Aw, Jesus† (167). These happy times contrast with the hungry, dark times in Ireland when she is on the dole and has no money to feed her children. It also is a contrast with the consumption that Mr. Clohessy and many others have and die from.During the story, Frankie talks about how bleak life is, how hungry and how poor they are. Putting the dress away in the trunk is also like locking her dreams away. Angela often stares into the fire and she is probably remembering better times and regretting what her life has become. Frankie takes the dress out of the trunk and using it to make uniforms for his soccer team â€Å"The Red Hearts of Limerick†. He destroys his mother’s dress, which is like destroying her dreams but is also symbolic of his dreams being set free.Frankie makes red hearts from part of the dress that the team pins to their uniforms even though they look like red rags. The boys play a soccer game against a team of rich boys and Frankie scores the winning goal. He goes from feeling doomed because when he finds his mom’s dress he also finds out from his friend Mikey that he was born a bastard, to feeling hope because God wouldn’t let him score a goal if he was doomed. It comes straight to my foot and all I have to do is swivel to the left and swing that ball straight into the goal. There’s a whiteness in my head and I feel like a boy in heaven. and I keep thinking of the way the ball came to my foot and surely it was sent by God or the Blessed Virgin Mary who would never send such a blessing to one doomed for being born in half the time and I know as long as I live I’ll never forget that ball coming from Billy Campbell, that goal. (256-257) This is a very important feeling for Frank. He feels like he has something to live for. He pauses after he scores the winning goal because he feels like he has been blessed by God. He thinks to himself that he can’t be doomed if he was blessed enough to score the game winning goal.This sheds new light on Frank’s hopes and dreams. He knows now that if he works hard, gets a job and saves up money that he will be able to return back to America. As Frank’s dreams continue to grow, his mother’s dreams fade. She has given up all hope of her dreams for herself but still wants the best for her children. She loves her children even though she never comes right out and says it but you know she loves them because she will go on the dole and do without for herself so that her kids can eat. She even does distasteful things for Laman to keep a roof over their heads and some food on the table.Angela’s flapper dress is a strong symbol in the book. It illustrates that Angela was a young, carefree girl before she got pregnant and married Malachy. Little by little the poverty, Malachy’s drinking, problems with her relatives about Malachy, and losing her children chipped away at her hopes and dreams until there was nothing left for her but to smoke cigarettes and stare into the fire. The last of Angela’s dreams, ashes dying away in the fireplace. At this same time, Frank takes his mother’s dress and makes soccer uniforms with it. When he scores the winning goal in a game against the rich kids his dreams take flight.He dares to dream of a better life and saves money to return to America. He often saves money by doing things that would upset his mother if she knew about them but Frank feels the end result will be worth it. He will make sure his dreams become a reality however he needs to do it. This is similar to how his mother keeps a roof over their heads and food on the table. She does whatever she has to for her family, even if that means giving up her own dreams. She may not have realized that she was doing this but the red dress symbolically shows this. The Life of Kurt Vonnegut Essay The life of Kurt Vonnegut was filled with great accomplishments and great tragedies. The biggest tragedy that he faced had to be the fire bombing of Dresden in World War II. This is the topic of his book Slaughterhouse-Five. The book talks about one of Vonneguts friends who slips in and out of reality, having flashbacks of the experience at Dresden. Kurt Vonnegut was born in November of 1922 in Indianapolis. This is where he eventually met and married Jane Cox. Vonneguts life has been a struggle, starting with his mothers constant bouts with depression. In 1943, when Vonnegut enlisted, his others depression grew deeper. Because of that Private Vonnegut asked permission to visit home to surprise her on Mothers Day. She overdosed on sleeping pills the night before he arrived (Walker 206). Surprisingly, this tragedy was overshadowed by another incident in his life that happened just a year and a half after his mothers death, the fire bombing of Dresden. In late 1944, Vonnegut was captured by Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. On the night of February 13, 1945 exactly 100 American P. O. W. s and five German soldiers took shelter in a meat locker while the Royal Air Force joined by U. S bombers attacked and successfully annihilated the city of Dresden in one of the most vicious air raids ever. This event became a major influence in his writing career (The Biographies of Kurt Vonnegut 775). Vonnegut started writing novels in 1947, when he went to work for General Electric Research Laboratory. The job gave him the storyline for his first novel Player Piano. In 1951, he resigned from his job at G. E to pursue a full time writing career. He wrote many short stories, which in 1969 were assembled into a collection called Welcome o the Monkey House. The next novel was Cats Cradle in 1963, then The Sirens of the Titans and God Bless you, Mr. Rosewater in 1965 (Litz, 758). In Sluaghterhouse-Five, Vonnegut conveys the message that World War II was fought by children. He makes the vivid image of 17 and 18 year old boys in a far away place fighting for their country. That is the reason for the popular alternative title for the book, The Childrens Crusade. Vonnegut was one of the oldest men in his unit at 20 years old. He tells how he got captured by three German soldiers, one 25 and the other two 12 and 13 years old. At the end of the book as Vonnegut and the other men walk through what used to be Dresden, he doesnt know how to feel, having just been bombed by his own country (Litz 768). The book is not just about the war, but mostly about an outcast of society named Billy Pilgrim who travels through time from the present to the past, all in his own head, though it all seems very real to him. He believes that he has this ability because of his abduction by aliens called Talfamadorians. These aliens hold him on their planet and then release him later. The ingenious narration of the book makes us actually believe that we ravel from 1965, back to Dresden in 1944. Billy Pilgrims problems in the present obviously stemmed from his horrific experience in Dresden. In the book, he later becomes an optometrist and while flying to a convention with 30 other optometrists, the plane crashes and everyone dies except him. It is obvious by the second chapter of the book that Billy Pilgrim, is in fact, a type of Pilgrim going into places he has never been before, for a cause he believes in enough to be willing to sacrifice his life. Just like Vonnegut did in 1943, by dropping out of college to join the military. The innocence, vulnerability, and eagerness, to please is likened to Adam and Eve. Several times Billys description appears in terms of allusions to Jesus Christ, particularly as a silently suffering victim. Pilgrim is more autobiographical than any other character Vonnegut has come up with, yet is also profoundly different (Reed 774). One tool that is most fascinating about Vonneguts writing is his use of recapitulation, which is an important part of the structure of Slaughterhouse-Five. Vonnegut himself best sums up the novel on the title page, as a novel somewhat in the telegraphic schizophrenic manner of tales of the planet Tralfamadore (Slaughterhouse- Five). The main idea of the Tralfamadorian is that they see everything at the same time. They can see the past, present, or future. Their form of writing is based on a clump of symbols in a brief, urgent message, describing what is going on. They dont read one at a time, yet all at once. In this fascinating way, Vonnegut portrayed a life that has no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, and no effects (The Biography of Kurt Vonnegut 201). Vonnegut emphasized that Pilgrim is not simply an established identity who undergoes a series of changes, but all the different things he is at different times. The same principles that govern the person also governs the act as well. Vonnegut states that Dresden is led up to, as it were, by events that precede and follow it. It is surrounded by allusions that lead up to other devastating events in history (Reed 205). The historical allusions that Vonnegut uses are very repetitious. War seems to be a type of metaphor for the condition of people in the world and Dresden is the end result. It is Vonneguts basis for what he thinks about society and human behavior. His cynical approach to war makes the book somewhat funny, yet every joke had a profound meaning. The narration doesnt start until the second chapter, which he starts off by saying Listen. This is a crucial attention getter because Pilgrim and his platoon are soon swept into a raging battle and then captured. When Slaughterhouse-Five first came out in 1969, it became very popular specially among college students. The sales, and the movie based on it, assured Vonneguts success. He started getting invitations to speak at places like Brown University and to the graduating class at Bennington University. He was also invited to teach creative writing at Harvard University. Vonnegut won many awards for Slaughterhouse-Five including an honorary L. H. D degree from Indiana University and the Literature Award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters (Litz 759). The reason the book was so popular among younger people was because of its strong antiwar message at a time when war wasnt too popular because of Vietnam. It was mandatory reading in some Universities, yet some schools and libraries banned it from their shelves. He was one of the most popular authors of the late 60s (Reed 770). The experience in Dresden was the reason that Vonnegut started writing stories. He couldnt write about it until 1969 partly because he didnt have a publisher but also because it was too terrible to talk about it right after the war. All his books that he wrote before Slaughterhouse-Five had to do with some aspect of war or had a protagonist like Billy Pilgrim in them. Vonnegut wrote It seemed categorical imperative that I write bout Dresden, the firebombing of Dresden, since it was the largest massacre in the history of Europe and I am a person of European extraction and I, a writer, had been present. Most men in their 40s were strongly for the war, yet Vonnegut took a stand against all wars in this book. What is interesting about this book is that, in it, he never says war is bad or it shouldnt happen, because by just describing the devastation in Dresden you get a vivid picture of what he is trying to get across, and how much suffering goes on. He wrote the book in such a way that you could actually imagine the anguish that the P. O. W. s were going through at Slaughterhouse-Five. In conclusion, Slaughterhouse-Five is not just an interesting book that is enjoyable o read, but a book that makes a statement. It shows what war is like from a soldiers point of view and how it can affect them for the rest of their lives. Thats what it did for Billy Pilgrim and also for Kurt Vonnegut, who just couldnt stop thinking about a war that happened 24 years earlier. The life of Kurt Vonnegut was filled with great accomplishments and great tragedies. The biggest tragedy that he faced had to be the fire bombing of Dresden in World War II. This is the topic of his book Slaughterhouse-Five. The book talks about one of Vonneguts friends who slips in and out of reality, having flashbacks of the xperience at Dresden. Kurt Vonnegut was born in November of 1922 in Indianapolis. This is where he eventually met and married Jane Cox. Vonneguts life has been a struggle, starting with his mothers constant bouts with depression. In 1943, when Vonnegut enlisted, his mothers depression grew deeper. Because of that Private Vonnegut asked permission to visit home to surprise her on Mothers Day. She overdosed on sleeping pills the night before he arrived (Walker 206). Surprisingly, this tragedy was overshadowed by another incident in his life that happened just a year and a half after his mothers death, the fire bombing of Dresden. In late 1944, Vonnegut was captured by Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. On the night of February 13, 1945 exactly 100 American P. O. W. s and five German soldiers took shelter in a meat locker while the Royal Air Force joined by U. S bombers attacked and successfully annihilated the city of Dresden in one of the most vicious air raids ever. The firestorm left over 130,000 people dead and many more missing. This event became a major influence in his writing career (The Biographies of Kurt Vonnegut 775). Vonnegut started writing novels in 1947, when he went to work for General Electric Research Laboratory.

What Ive Learned Writing Internationally I’m based in South Africa, but many of my clients aren’t. Writing internationally opens you up to a whole new reader-base, and it means access to more paying gigs! Getting in Break in Language and style switches    Read the publications you aim to pitch. Keep language and style differences in mind: UK, US and South African English differ, and it pays to know why. In my case, the South African rand weakened drastically against the U.S. dollar (approximately R15.39 per one US dollar) last year, and it meant a minor bump in pay for a while. But of course, that fluctuates. Charge clients the same rates, but convert your per hour or page rate into the applicable currency (and yes, it’s okay to round off). Sites like XE (xe.com) help you convert currencies (xe.com/currencyconverter) and keep an eye on applicable exchange rates. Payment Different countries use different payment systems. While a direct bank transfer is fine for local clients, my international clients pay via PayPal. Do your research on which payment system is the most popular in the country you’ll be writing for, so you don’t get any nasty delayed payment surprises. Cashing money paid via PayPal to my bank account takes an additional five to eight business days, so I’ve learned to account for that. Taxes internationally Know the tax rules in your country and theirs. In addition to my own tax forms, I’ve had to fill out a W-8BEN (Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner) form for international vendors. The Study of Shell Middens in Archaeology One type of site that some archaeologists love to investigate is the shell midden or kitchen midden. A shell midden is a heap of clam, oyster, whelk, or mussel shells, obviously, but unlike other types of sites, it is the result of a clearly recognizable single-activity event. Other kinds of sites, such as campsites, villages, farmsteads, and rock shelters, have their attractions, but a shell midden was created by and large for one purpose: dinner. Diets and Shell Middens Shell middens are found throughout the world, on coastlines, near lagoons, and tidewater flats, along major rivers, in small streams, wherever some variety of shellfish is found. Although shell middens also date from pretty much all of prehistory, many shell middens date to the Late Archaic or (in the old world) Late Mesolithic periods. The Late Archaic and European Mesolithic periods (around 4,000-10000 years ago, depending on where youre at in the world) were interesting times. People were still essentially hunter-gatherers, but by then were settling down, reducing their territories, focusing on a broader range of food and living resources. One often used way to diversify the diet was to depend on shellfish as a reasonably easy to obtain food source. Of course, as Johnny Hart once said, â€Å"the bravest man I ever saw was the first to devour an oyster, raw†. Studying Shell Middens According to Glyn Daniel in his great history 150 Years of Archaeology, shell middens were first explicitly identified as archaeological in context (i.e., built by humans, not other animals) during the mid-nineteenth century in Denmark. In 1843, the Royal Academy of Copenhagen led by archaeologist J.J. Worsaee, geologist Johann Georg Forchhammer, and zoologist Japetus Steenstrup proved that the shell heaps (called Kjoekken moedding in Danish) were, in fact, cultural deposits. Archaeologists have studied shell middens for all kinds of reasons. Studies have included Calculating how much dietary meat there is in a clam (only a few grams in comparison to the weight of the shell),Food processing methods (steamed, baked, dried),Archaeological processing methods (sampling strategies vs. counting the entire middenwhich nobody in their right mind would do),Seasonality (what time of year and how often were clambakes held),Other purposes for the shell mounds (living areas, burial sites). Not all shell middens are cultural; not all cultural shell middens are solely the remnants of a clambake. One of my favorite shell midden articles is Lynn Ceci’s 1984 paper in World Archaeology. Ceci described a series of weird donut-shaped shell middens, consisting of prehistoric pottery and artifacts and shell located on hillsides in New England. She figured out that they were, in fact, evidence of early Euro-American settlers reusing prehistoric shell deposits as fertilizer for apple orchards. The hole in the middle was where the apple tree stood! Shell Middens Through Time The oldest shell middens in the world are about 140,000 years old, from the Middle Stone Age of South Africa, at sites like Blombos Cave. There are fairly recent shell middens in Australia, within the last couple hundred years anyway, and the most recent shell middens in the United States that I’m aware of date to the late 19th century and early 20th century AD when the shell button industry was in progress along the Mississippi River. You can still find heaps of freshwater mussel shells with several holes punched out of them lying along the bigger rivers of the American midwest.
